The Town of Nanton presented some interesting information to its residents in its annual Citizen's Report recently.

The report covered topics like upcoming projects and past achievements.

One piece of good news was the Town's budget has an unexpected surplus.

Mayor Rick Everett told residents during the report the unaudited statement shows the Town is under budget by $138,000 for 2016.

"Revenues have been up quite significantly in 2016 due to things like land sales and investments."

If the audited budget comes in they will be able to put $400,000 into reserves.

"The Town of Nanton is in a great financial position currently."

The biggest project the town is working on is the new wastewater treatment plant, and construction is scheduled to be finished on March 27, and a ribbon cutting and tours will be held the next day.

After the grand opening the pumps in the plant will be tested for 42 days.

"Currently in June they turn it over lock, stock and barrel and we will shut down the old plant and the new plant will take over," he said.

Everett adds council and the Town are very happy with the project.

"We are very happy with the contractor and the engineer. It's come together very well. "

Council was also happy with public meetings they held this year, where they talked to residents about proposed bylaws and changes to existing ones, before drafting policy.

"Its the first time we tried what we called a public engagement meeting. We brought not only citizens interested in animal control bylaw, we also brought in people from different communities."

They discussed bees, and bee keeping, chickens and cats and dogs, in regards to changing the animal control bylaw.

"Don't build the bylaw first, don't build the draft, lets go out to the public and see what they think, take all that information see if we can build a bylaw from that," Everett added.

They also used the same format when starting to work on the Community Standards Bylaw.

Both bylaws are under construction, and holding public meetings first is a format they plan on using again.
