The Town of Nanton is spending some big money on their arena this Summer.

Mayor Jennifer Handley says it all has to do with recommendations coming out of the tragedy that killed three Southern Alberta men last year at the Fernie arena when they had an ammonia leak.

"We've had to do some major upgrades to bring it up to standard. The quotes came back and it ended up coming out to just under $600,000."

Handley says the money's coming from a mix of grants and cash in reserves.

She says the work will be done before the start of hockey season in September.
