It was a match-up for the ages on Wednesday as the RCMP in High River took on the Highwood Mustangs in a simple game of hockey.

At first it was going their way as the cops pulled out to an an early 4 to nothing lead over the Highwood High school squad.

But by the end of the second period the youngsters were in control 11 to 5.

Grade 12 student Kate Minor, who plays with the AA Rocky Mountain Raiders in High River, said all the hockey players at the school put their names in a hat and if your name was drawn you got to play.

"It's like a new opportunity for us," she said. "This is cool."

Quinn Groeneveld was looking forward to the game for the chance for to get to know the officers.

He was a bit worried in the first period when the Mustangs were losing.

"I was a little scared that we might lose to the guys, but they were a little red in the face so I think we are doing better."

The Mustangs won 14 to 7.

"It is a good thing to get out in front of the whole community," Groeneveld said.

He added it was fun to plan with his teammates, and with his friends, that play on other teams.

For Constable Will Luettger it was his first time playing hockey.

He is from the west coast and while he played Lacrosse and skated a few times he enjoyed the challenge.

"It's for the community and it's for the kids," he said. "I'm having the time of my life."

He added he felt like Bambi on skates.

"It's worth coming out and trying something different."

He hopes the game becomes an annual event.
