High River council's agreed to spend $11,000 to preserve a couple of the downtown murals.

There are 16 murals in various conditions, some of which were originals that went up in the early 90's.

The Fort Spitzee mural on the east side of Evelyn's restaurant is still in good shape and will get a cleaning and varnishing.

The mural depicting High River's First Nurse is on the east side of the Rio Alto restaurant.

It's also considered in good shape and needs cleaning and varnishing and a portion at the bottom needs to be reattached to the building.

A report to council says murals generally last about 20 years and deterioration is primarily due to the painting being done on the wrong type of surface.

The work will be done under the guidance of an art conservator.
