Livingstone-Macleod MLA Pat Stier has introduced legislation that will protect property rights.

Stier says that's not the only aim of Bill 204.

"This one here -is also augmented too by also eliminating squatters' rights being carried on any further in Alberta, we're going to abolish squatters' rights as well," Stier says.

He says it's high time Alberta caught up to the rest of the country and did away with squatters rights.

"We need to eliminate it from the rules as soon as we can because there actually have been some cases that have gone through as recently as this past year and a half where land has actually changed hands because of adverse possession, which means essentially that someone can take over a parcel of land that has not had any kind of agreement placed on it between the new occupant and the actual titled owner," Stier explained. "If no kind of agreement has been put in place or any kind of paperwork has been struck upon that deal they can actually apply and have that title changed."

A Wildrose motion on abolishing squatters' rights received all-party support from the Resource Stewardship Committee last February, but, he says, there's no indication that legislation will be coming from the government.
