Canada's provincial forestry ministers spoke in a conference call Thursday on the state of the industry since the U.S. announced tariffs on softwood lumber.

Alberta Forestry Minister Oneil Carlier says there's a lot of consultation going on.

"I had the opportunity to meet with industry before the call, after the announcement of what the countervailing duties are going to be, and for the most part it's 'we've gone through this before, we're going to get through it again, it's unfortunate now this is round five of the softwood lumber disagreement that we have with the United States but we will move forward and we'll get by it," he says

He says they have to be really careful deciding what steps to take to protect the industry since the U.S. can use that as part of their argument for the tariffs.

Natural Resources Minister Jim Carr and the ministers discussed a number of items including continuing to promote the use of Canadian wood here at home, and work to ensure any workers negatively affected are aware Employment and Social Development Canada provides support through programs including Employment Insurance and Career Counselling.
