High River's mayor is one guy who's going to miss the Town's Director of Emergency Management when she goes.

Carly Benson is leaving the position in High River for the west coast and Mayor Craig Snodgrass says it shows just how vital the work she did was.

"I'm so proud of the work that Carly's done for High River and it's sad that we're losing her but when the City of Vancouver takes her on I think it kind of tells you what she's done for High River because she's being noticed, the work she's done is being noticed across Canada," the Mayor says. "She's left a legacy that people in High River can be very, very thankful for."

He says people need to know that being prepared for a disaster is not just something that happens in June, it can happen at any time of year with things like grass fires, wind storms or massive dumps of snow like a couple years ago in September.

"Those kinds of things are emergency management issues that take a proper plan in place to handle, it's not just June folks, it's 12 months of the year that this stuff can happen now," he says.

Snodgrass says it's for those reasons he believes the position needs to be a salaried full time position to keep the community safe and protected.
