The alignment for Macleod Trail in front of Spitzee School in High River has been finalized.

Council discussed a number of options at its council meeting Monday, April 24, and ended up going with the proposal that was in front of them which pleased Mayor Craig Snodgrass.

"I did not like removing parking off of that north side (of Macleod Trail) because the parents would have ended up parking on the street and that would be twice the gong show, so keep that parking on the north side just for the residents that are along there," he says.

Parking will still be allowed on the north side (right side of the photo) of Macleod Trail when construction is complete.

Councillor Emile Blokland was blunt in his assessment of the safety issues that have plagued the area for years with parents dropping off and picking up their children at the school.

"We've had a problem at Spitzee School for a long time, especially with the jaywalking, parents parking across the street and jay walking with their kids, we've got two crosswalks at the end of each street where parents can safely walk with their children across the street and I just truly believe that parents that choose to jaywalk across the street are utterly being stupid and we've had discussions about how we can enforce that but unfortunately you cannot legislate stupid," Blokland says.

School buses, which now pick up and drop off students on the east side of the school will do so in front of the school when the work is done.

Blokland says that will give the Foothills School Division a chance to decide how they'll manage the east parking lot which might provide for a safer drop off zone.
