High River Town Councillor Peter Loran has resigned from council after taking a job in Chilliwack B.C.

Loran says he'd originally planned to stay on until later in the year but after discussing it with the Mayor and other members of council he felt it would be better to leave right away so a by-election can be held and a new council member can get sworn in for the last year of the mandate.

He's proud of the work the council has accomplished since being elected just four months after the 2013 flood.

"There's some things that are really near and dear to my heart that we accomplished," he says. "We got, with the Province of Alberta and the Renewal Office, we got a lot of that berming and that protection for the community, and making it safe, done in an amazing pace over a couple of years and it was a ton of hard work, a little bit left to go but it's there and it'll happen."

He's also very proud of the downtown, saying council needed to be bold and needed to be different and it needed to be dug up. He says the economic development and strategic planning areas were other areas he was really excited about seeing it move forward.

He says the internal culture of the Town's organization has also shifted away from an " us versus them" to more of a team all working together and that's made a world of difference.

A by-election has been set for October 17.
