The fourth deadliest intersection in Alberta is in our local foothills district.

Numbers from the province show Highway 2 between the Okotoks turn-off onto the High River turn-off is the fourth most deadly portion of Highway in Alberta.

Numbers obtained through the Freedom of Information Act, by the Wildrose Party show 16 fatal crashes on that stretch between 2005 to 2014.

Highwood MLA Wayne Anderson says, an overpass is planned for the intersection at 370th Avenue.

"My understanding is there is a plan to put an overpass in there coming up in the future. I can't give you an exact date, but there was a request put in and hopefully over the next couple of years the NDP Government will see fit to do that."

While he'd like to see more overpasses built, Anderson mentions we may have to settle for less, but he'd like to see progress sooner than later.

"It may just seem like more lights and light exchanges and that's the kind of interchanges they're going to try and put in for the next period of time. It's probably cost effective, but I'm hoping as things progress that we'll see an overpass in that danger zone that's on Highway 2."

Highway 3 between Fort Mcleod and Lethbridge is the second most dangerous highway in Alberta, while Highway 44 between Spruce Grove and Westlock, near Edmonton is the highway with the most fatalities, with 22 over that 10 year period.
