The Town of High River plans to do some remediation work at the headwaters of the Upper Little Bow which runs right through the town.

Parks Planning Supervisor Kim Unger says the area they'll be working on runs from east of 2 Street South East, between 4 and 8 Avenues behind Abbeyfield House.

"We're planning on removing a bunch of the old silt and sediment that's currently there," she says. "There was some there before the flood, but the flood made it substantially worse."

She says they'll remove the materials and then build what's called a fore bay which will allow the town to maintain the waterway.

"What we're planning on doing is a fore bay and maybe another level of treatment, this is a way that we can help improve the health of the reach, is by trapping it in one spot so we can take it out," Unger says. "Urbanization causes a lot of damage to natural systems so I think that we should go back and make it right."

They'll also do some riparian planting, including edge planting and aquatic plants to help improve water quality.

She says a public meeting will be held, probably in the fall to bring everyone up to speed on what's going to be happening.

The removal of the silt could be done this winter or carried over to next spring but the landscape work will have to wait until next year.

The Disaster Recovery Program and the Long Term Recovery funding will pay for the work.
