After years of campaigning by M.D. of Foothills Reeve Larry Spilak, followed by months of construction, a set of traffic lights is now up and running on Highway 2A at Dunbow Road.

Spilak says he's happy to finally see a big safety improvement at the dangerous intersection.

"It is a very good feel watching and seeing these lights up and running," he says. "People are certainly obeying them, and it's a safer place to drive today because of it."

Spilak says he still understands motorists' frustrations when encountering traffic lights on the highway, but the M.D. feels it's the right decision.

"Nobody likes to impede driving and trying to get somewhere," he says. "It's not anything we like to do, but by the same token, safety comes first, and that's the way we put our priorities."

While the speed limit was 80 km/h during construction, Spilak says the decision on the new speed limit isn't up to the M.D.

"That's in the hands of the Province, they will make that decision," he says. "I noticed it was still 110 (km/h) from the Dunbow lights to the next set of lights North of there. They may choose to leave it there, I don't know, but that will be their decision."
