The High River Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion is hoping to make people aware of the High River Air Station, which began in 1921. Sergeant at Arms with the Legion Branch No. 71 Bob Collins says they will be placing a sign and RCAF flagpole just off the highway to draw attention to the history.

"To make the public aware that even though the hanger, one hanger is there, how big that base was. As time goes on we seem to be losing that and therefore we want to make the public aware. It held a lot of pilots. There was matter of fact a lot of female personnel there."

Collins says the sign they are placing incorporates a model of the original base.

"Some of the hangers that they used back then were portable and they came from WWI from France. So, you know, there is a lot of history there. You just got to find it and remind people of it. Actually, it's going to have a copy of the air force base during the second world war."

The High River Air Station began in 1921 and contributed to the start of the Royal Canadian Air Force. The High River Legion is working with the Bomber Command Museum in Nanton to make people aware of it's history.
