The High River Legion handed over a cheque for $25,436 to the High River Hospital Friday morning.

It's from last year's Poppy Fund Drive and High River Legion Vice President John Rotheisler says they ended up with way more money than they thought they would.

"We helped Okotoks out, we absorbed a piece of Okotoks, so our area got bigger, more people. And then we had the tragedy in Ottawa, which really put the Poppy Campaign in everybody's mind. So, our donations last year were phenomenal. We made a lot of donations. So, today we're able to make a pretty sizeable donation to the hospital because of that."

The money will go towards Veterans in the long term care facility of the hospital.

The Legion kicks off this year's Poppy Campaign Sunday, November 1.
