The Town of High River has decided to clamp down on people who park illegally downtown.

The Director of Community Services Lisa Reinders says there's one violation they're after more than others.

"What we want to do is encourage parking in public parking areas throughout the downtown and also to encourage people to park in regular parking spots," she says "What we're really working at is making sure people aren't parking in the handicapped spots, if they do not have a handicap sticker in their window."

She says they have done a campaign encouraging local businesses to use public parking areas by the Servus Credit Union and behind the Museum of the Highwood as well as behind the municipal building to free up spots on the street so people won't park illegally in the handicap spots.

Reinders says they'll do an information campaign and then move to warning tickets mid June, but by mid-July. Violators will face a $100 fine.
