What's expected to be a week-long Fatality Inquiry begins Monday into the August 2012 killing of Foothills MD Peace Officer Rod Lazenby.

The 62-year-old Lazenby was a retired RCMP officer who worked in bylaw enforcement for the Municipal District.

Lazenby was killed when he went to a rural property south of Calgary to deal with a dog complaint.

Trevor Kloschinsky was charged with first-degree murder but was found not criminally responsible because doctors said he suffered a mental disorder that meant he didn't understand what he was doing was wrong.

Kloschinsky drove Lazenby to a Calgary police station and told officers he had apprehended a “dog thief.”

The inquiry is being held in Calgary in Provincial Court to come up with recommendations to avoid a similar tragedy..
