Store owners in High River are finding their customers are coming in from outside the town while locals are shopping elsewhere.

Chamber President Stephen Muth says they need to find solutions both to attract people to town and to keep locals in town.

"I think we definitely want to work with our community and our town." said Muth. "And to say okay what are residents looking for in High River and what are they leaving High River for to purchase and is there the ability to fill that."

He adds people coming to High River to shop are doing so because they can purchase what they want.

Muth says the question is how to fill in the gap between what residents want and what is available in town.

"What are residents looking for in High River, what are they leaving High River to purchase and is there the ability to fill that."

The best solution for a healthy business district is to have a good mixture of local shoppers and external shoppers.

"Marketing High River to the outside isn't a bad idea, so if we can generate external traffic to come to High River and shop here that is something we definitely need to support."
