Okotokians have a new place to be fit outdoors.

A new outdoor fitness park has been installed behind St. John Paul II Collegiate School.

The park contains 15 pieces of equipment attached to a concrete base that are geared towards body weight type exercises.

Christ the Redeemer School Division first approached Okotoks Town Council with the idea for the fitness park last fall which council said they supported in December. A total of $15,000 from Town Council was given to pursuing the park.

Susan Laurin, Community Services Director for the Town of Okotoks, says she thinks the partnership with the Town and CRSD for the park is a great opportunity.

"The school can use it during the day, they'll be able to teach their students lifelong skills for fitness and for recreation and being outside, which is in alignment with the national recreation framework as well," she says. "In the evenings and when the fitness equipment's not being used by the school all of our residents throughout Okotoks can also use it."

Laurin says it's great to bring more opportunities to the south part of town.

"We thought it was a great addition for our students in town and it's also a great addition for our residents, especially those that live on the south side because we have the fitness equipment down by Seaman Stadium and we have some opportunities on the north side and this is our first outdoor park on the south side of the river."

Laurin adds all of the fitness parks in town are non-programmed so they're accessible and free to use at any time.
