Going into winter there were some dire predictions about La Nina with lots of snow and cold this winter.

Senior meteorologist with Environment Canada David Phillips says but that's certainly not the case now.

"In spite of the horror stories that people were talking about this winter, the winter of La Nina, it's going to be a classic traditional winter, a winter of our youth, our models seem corrected now," he says. "They seem to be saying for the next month, say December right through to mid-January, they seem to be warmer than normal."

He says after that it's harder to get it right but they're showing more of a normal kind of winter pattern.

"It could be that the roughest part of winter will be at the end and not the beginning and of course if it does bring some moisture, I think most farmers and ranchers will be pretty elated," Phillips says.

He says when he looks at the forecasts for High River and southern Alberta, it's a good news story in that once we put up with a couple months of winter near the end, we jump right into spring.
