Start raiding the seed racks and stocking up on planting soil - it's go time.

For garden enthusiasts that are thinking of starting some plants indoors, to get a jump on summer, April is the time to do it.

Katrina Diebel, owner of Vale's Greenhouse in Black Diamond, says to do your research though some plants are easier than others.

She started planting in December but having a greenhouse with grow lights makes a big difference.

"Pansies and petunias take an awfully long time and they don't cost very much at the garden centre," said Diebel. "Those type of plants take about 14 weeks."

However she adds there are lots of plants that are easy to start like marigolds, evening scented stocks, cosmos and alyssum.

Look for information on the seed packages that take about eight weeks or less to get started.

The first week of April is a good time to start the easier plants and they will be great when you plant them outside at the end of May beginning of June.

Every garden centre carries different brands of seeds so make sure you shop around when looking for seeds over the next couple of week.
