It was standing room only as residents of Black Diamond filed into Council Chambers last night to see the two newest members of council be sworn in.

Brian Marconi beat out Dave Geske for the only council sea that was up for grabs when Michael Jackson moved on and Marconi says he's ready to get to work.

"I've been on the opposite side of the table for eighteen months and now I'm on the other side. I'm just trying to figure out how I can get across to the other side and ask myself a question!"

Both men have spent the last couple weeks in orientation with fellow council members about general procedures and current issues facing Black Diamond.

Marconi won the lone Counselor seat that was up for grabs by just 25 votes while Glen Fagen beat rival Les Miller by 144 votes for the mayors chair.

Glen Fagen spoke to us just before his official swearing in as Mayor and he says he's optimistic about the future of Black Diamond.

"It's a new beginning, with a change with the two of us out of seven. There's a little bit of integration going on and the public is here to support us and it's nice to see them here as well."

Fagen says ever since the election results came in it's been full steam ahead.

"Right now we've got a whole pile of business that's on the blotter for tonight that is fairly new but we have some  historical stuff that we're going to be looking at as well. It's been busy, I can't say I've been standing still."

700 Black Diamond residents voted in the 2016 by-election.
