Okotoks RCMP invited members of the media to the detachment on Thursday, November 21, to answer questions regarding the arrest of Armin Babic following a residential robbery in the Foothills on November 19th.

Corporal Korey Crerar says Babic is alleged to have impersonated an officer in order to gain access to the residence.

"We have evidence to support those allegations, and as a result, the charges were laid."

The initial release from Okotoks RCMP made mention of a shot having been fired, which they say could have been a blank. Crerar says Babic is alleged to have discharged the round, with no indication that the homeowners may have done so.

He says officers were able to locate the suspect vehicle (a Chevy Silverado) and take Babic into custody within ten minutes of their initial dispatch, largely due to quick thinking from the homeowners.

"The prompt response by the members working at the time led to a successful outcome all because the homeowners called us. They gave the resources, the information needed, to act promptly. We're very very pleased that they called us and we encourage homeowners and anyone who is victimized to call 911 in these types of scenarios so we can have trained resources respond accordingly."

Babic's two charges for "impersonation of a peace officer using an article, uniform or equipment," led some to draw a comparison to a case of police impersonation from May of this year. Crerar says there is no indication that the two incidents are related.

He says they are not looking for anyone else at this time, as RCMP have no reason to believe a second individual was involved.
