By now we've all either seen the video or heard the story of the American tourist near Swan Hills who killed a black bear with a home made spear on a hunting trip this spring.

The video he posted on YouTube of the incident has been since been removed after creating a firestorm of controversy.

The President of the High River Fish and Game Club Tony Ewanishin doesn't agree or disagree with what the hunter did, but says putting the video on social media wasn't the best move.

"I don't think it was the right thing to do to broadcast in on social media. We all take a trophy now and then, but we don't broadcast it all over. We might show our friends a picture or something, that's about it."

In the wake of the incident, and the ensuing public outcry, the Province says they'll put regulations in place in this Fall's hunting guide making hunting with a spear illegal.

While not taking a position either way, Ewanishin says that's a "knee jerk" reaction, and the Province should instead look to hunters and other stakeholders, along with the public to chip in their two cents on the practice before issuing an outright ban.

Ewanishin says High River Fish & Game promote a sustainable hunt, and proper ethics along with safety training.

He says this is the first time he's ever heard of someone hunting with a spear in Canada, but points out what the hunter did was not illegal as there are currently no regulations against spear hunting in Alberta.
