The history of local media and sports is now on display at the Okotoks Museum.

As part of the museum's Canada 150 celebrations, the exhibits "Have You Heard the News?" and "Games We Play" take visitors back to the early beginnings of local media and sports teams.

Museum Specialist, Cathy Coutts, says Okotoks' sports history extends beyond hockey and baseball.

"Okotoks has long been a hockey town and a baseball town and that dates back to the early 1900's, but in the early days Okotoks also had a lawn bowling team and a cricket team, both of which have petered out in more recent years, but Okotoks also had a history with tennis, lacrosse, and curling."

The museum has included a couple of hands-on activities for the "Have You Heard the News?" exhibit.

Coutts says this helps connect visitors more with the displays.

"Sometimes when you enter a museum you see signs that say 'don't touch' and that's for the preservation of the artifacts, but I wanted to give visitors an opportunity to do some hands-on learning so that's why we have them building an FM radio and creating a little news paper to give them a chance to interact with history."

Both exhibits are on display at the Okotoks Museum until the end of August.
