High River RCMP are investigating the accidental drowning of a 48-year-old High River man.

RCMP say the man was swimming with friends in the Highwood River early in the evening of Saturday, August 26, when he went missing.

According to police, the man didn't return after he had left his group of friends to find a deeper area to swim.

A search Saturday night by High River RCMP, Calgary Police HAWCS helicopter, RCMP police dog services and Foothills Search and Rescue had to be called off due to low light.

Members of the High River Fire Department located the body of the missing man early in the morning of Sunday, August 27.

RCMP, along with the chief medical examiner, are continuing their investigation into the drowning.
