High River's Mayor has wasted little time, getting to meet virtually Tuesday April 27 with the coal policy consultation committee.

Craig Snodgrass says it was a productive session and he came away impressed.

"I was able to meet with four of the five coal committee members, a very good meeting and I have a lot of trust in these individuals that they are going to keep this very independent from the government, that was made very very clear," he says. "Chair Ron Wallace wants nothing to do with having the government involved in the work this committee is tasked to do. He's a strong individual and he's going to keep this committee in line."

Snodgrass says all the committee members are very dedicated people and having to do a lot of the work virtually is going to be a big challenge for them.

"We've got a good committee behind it, I've got full faith, there's a good balance to it but the results of the work that this committee does are going to be honest and truthful."

The mayor says he appeared before the committee on his own behalf and as mayor, representing the Town of High River.

He says he and councillor Bruce Masterman have led the charge but he's had a number of discussions with energy minister Sonya Savage, giving her council's thoughts on how the committee should be formed.
