If you've taken a walk recently and noticed more fruit bearing trees, that's because the Town of High River has teamed up with Wild Rose Food Connections on their "Harvest High River" initiative.

The initiative provides residents with some easy access foods around town.

Program Coordinator for Wild Rose Food Connections, Sarah Bruinsma says she read about another town who had done the same thing and thought it was a great idea for High River.

"What a great idea! The Town of High River has been planting edible trees and shrubs for many years within their public parks and natural areas, so they (the Town of High River) thought it was a great idea so we worked together to make it happen."

Bruinsma says there are eight types of fruit available in town.

Bruinsma says anyone can go and pick fruit from the trees and shrubs.

"They can just go online, figure out what they want to pick, figure out the locations and then they can go down. One of the best things is the Town doesn't spray pesticides so you can feel confident when you take it."

Bruinsma says those who do go and pick up some fruit should only pick enough for themselves.

Bruinsma says the initiative will provide some easy access food for people in High River.

"So there's planters downtown that provide an assortment of herbs, veggies, and fruits during the growing season. They have a GIS mapping that they have on their website and it lists the location of apples, cherries, choke cherries, crab apples, plums, and saskatoons."
