RCMP and Alberta Sheriffs were out on the weekend conducting checkstops.

Sergeant Brent Hawker with the High River RCMP says it was part of a larger effort.

"Saturday night the National Impaired Driving Enforcement Campaign went forward," he says. "Police throughout Canada were conducting checkstops to make sure the motoring public was safe, sadly impaired driving remains one of the leading causes of criminal death in Canada."

Sgt. Hawker says as the holiday season approaches it's a good chance to remind drivers to be safe of the roads.

"T he members here in High River conducted three checkstops, they 203 vehicles and it resulted in no serious offences being detected, certainly no impaired drivers were detected by we got good feedback from those who went through it was good to see them out and about checking to make sure the public was safe."

He says checkstops are certainly effective, the ones that are done early in the evening allows people to see the RCMP and Sheriffs are out and they 're not willing to take the risk, especially Sgt. Hawker says when there are so many other ways to get home safely.
