High River RCMP had it pretty good over the course of the Christmas season.

While they had a few call-outs, like the Christmas Day recovery of stolen goods, High River RCMP Sergeant Brent Hawker says overall it was quiet around the region over the holidays.

Provincially the number of fatalities on Alberta highways was down to just one, from five last year, while the number of injury accidents were down by 40 from 2015 to 95.

Hawker says that's good news to hear.

"We were fortunate this year that the snow came before Christmas and the highways were in relatively good shape during the Christmas season which has obviously impacted on the stats that show just one fatality in the Province during that time frame."

The number of impaired driving charges, along with 24-hour roadside suspensions were also down this year, which Hawker says shows the message of not drinking and driving is starting to get through.
