Albertans are being encouraged to take advantage of the charitable tax credit in the province.

Minister of Culture and Tourism David Eggen has joined representatives from a number of charitable organizations to show the work they do and the benefits that the charities and donors receive through the charitable tax credit in Alberta.

Eggen says especially during this time of year with the holidays coming up, Albertans are reminded of the usefulness of the tax credit.

"There was some debate about whether or not it would stay the way it is, but our government made sure we had one of the best charitable tax credit schemes in the entire country," he says.

When you donate $200 you receive a 35 per cent credit, and when you donate over $200 you receive a 50 per cent credit. However, the tax credit is only applicable to registered charities in Alberta.

"If you were looking for a receipt, you should check that it's a registered tax charity here in the province of Alberta," Eggen says.

With the lull in the economy, more people will be turning to charities during the holiday season, so it is not only the spirit of the holidays, but according to Eggen, it is also the spirit of Alberta.

"It is also the spirit of when we are in tough economic times that we always try to look after each other, that's the Alberta way, that's the way we do things in this province."
