The Okotoks Girl Guides were out in full force Wednesday night helping the town of Okotoks decorate their fall scarecrow displays.

Over 20 guides were on hand at the Okotoks Rec Centre helping Community Events Coordinator Mark Doherty stuff and decorate the fall figures.

Guide Leader of the 3rd Okotoks Girl guides Laureen Walker says events like this is what being in Girl Guides is all about.

"It's part of what we do, we get involved with the community and we encourage it and this opportunity came up and we thought it would be just a fun thing to do."

Walker says it's a great way to give back to the community.

"It teaches them pride of the community, teaches them to be active in the community, teaches them leadership skills," she says. "We try to promote that and we try to promote them to be confident and teach them skills that they'll carry forward in life with."

Whether it's helping the town or other organizations, Walker says the Girl Guides are more than just those delicious cookies they sell.

"We try to get out a couple times with that as well as into the community, any opportunities that come up for the girls we do."

Be sure to watch for the scarecrows during this weekend's Harvestfest.
