Earth Hour is one way the whole world can come together for one hour and do something good for the planet.

Remember to turn off all your unnecessary appliances, lights and electronics from 8:30 to 9:30 pm Saturday night, March 25.

Natasha Russell, Corporate Communications Advisor for FortisAlberta, says there are some good prizes to be won through their social media contest.

"All you have to do is share a photo or tell us what you will be doing to save power during Earth Hour," Russel said.

You can win 24 LED light bulbs and a couple of other prizes that will help you save energy at home.

FortisAlberta is also awarding Earth Hour Grants to municipalities that registered ahead of time with them.

Communities who create or enhance energy efficiencies can win grants of $5,000, $2,000 or $1,500.

And this year 29 communities signed up to take part in that challenge up from 24 last year.

Russell added Earth Hour is a time where you can recognize the power you use and to look for ways to reduce you power consumption.

To enter the social media contest share a photo or a story on what you are doing to save power and hashtag it #FortisABEarthHour.

They will be searching for entries on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
