After a long list of potential names for the brand new K-9 school in Okotoks, the school board has finally selected a winner.

Meadow Ridge School was the name decided by the board in their bi-weekly meeting on September 19.

Acting Superintendent Pamela Rannelli says the name reflects the geographical history of Okotoks.

"This [name] has been paired down from a long list of potential names, the committee has dug into the history of Okotoks, the geographical history and First Nations history so it kind of speaks to the environmental legacy around the area. The school is built next to a wetland, and if you go to that spot you can see it's on a ridge that overlooks the mountain vista, so I think it's a great name."

In the end, the final considered names were narrowed down to: Grandview School, Skyview School and Meadow Ridge.

Meadow Ridge school is scheduled to open on the start of the 2019 school year, with construction wrapping up at the end of next summer.

The school will welcome 700 new students from the surrounding area.
