Bundle up for the next couple of weeks as the Foothills is going to go into a deep freeze.

After above seasonal temperatures for the majority of November, expect the start of December to feel like an actual month of winter.

Environment Canada Meteorologist Dan Kulak says the northern cold air is already here.

"The transition will be occurring on the weekend right now, it looks to be Sunday afternoon into the evening when the cold air really starts to push in," he says. "So we're going to have those plus day time highs being replaced by minus teens day time highs by Tuesday. So a big change in the forecast as the weather pattern shifts and the cold arctic air moves southwards into Alberta."

Highs for the week in the Foothills range from -14 to -17 early this week and Kulak says those trends aren't going away.

"We are going to remain in this arctic air mass for at least the next seven days and there's some indications that it could be as long as two weeks right but certainly I think we want to be looking at the next one to two weeks for relatively below normal temperatures before we can think of warming up."

There was some good news in spite of the cold, Kulak says Environment Canada doesn't expect a large dump of snow during that time.

"It's not looking like a big snow event, maybe just enough light stuff to kind of cover the ground a bit and move around but the big thing is going to be the reduction in temperatures and perhaps briefly as the cold air moves in some wind chills associated."
