The long list of fire bans in southern Alberta has been extended.

A ban is in effect in the regions of the Forest Protection Area south of the Red Deer River along the mountains and foothills to the northern boundary of Waterton Lakes National Park.

No fires are permitted during the ban, including campfires, gas or propane stoves/barbecues and portable propane fire pits are still permitted.

All fire permits have been suspended and no new permits will be issued.

Both the M.D. of Foothills and Vulcan County have complete fire bans, while Okotoks has since been added to that list as a fire ban is in place for the Town.

In High River a fire ban is in place on open fires, but that doesn't include in backyards or in George Lane Park, as long as the fire is in a proper fire pit.

Individuals found to be violating the fire ban could be issued a $287 ticket, so if you're heading out this weekend, it's important to check the list of fire bans in the area.
