The Okotoks & District Chamber of Commerce got a first hand look at what the town could look like with its own fibre optic network.

Chairman of O-Net, Joe Gustafson says the Town of Olds has benefited greatly from buying their own network and has made their service to Olds more than just a luxury but now a utility.

He says once you get a network like O-Net there's almost no other way to go with phone, TV and internet services.

"It becomes invisible you no longer think about it," he says. "So now when we do things on the web or you're looking at downloading something or uploading something you do think do I have capacity. You just know that it's there and so it really becomes out of sight very quickly."

The price for a bundle of all three can range anywhere from $150 to $200 but with O-Net's ability to have download and upload speeds of 1000 mbps it's right up there in price with all major service providers.

"We're still in a very competitive market, there are other vendors out there that are offering phone, TV and internet services so you still have to be within a certain range. Of course you're offering from an internet stand-point a much more robust and faster network so we do charge maybe a little bit more for that but in the end it really comes out in a wash."

Gustafson says some of the characteristics of the O-Net include having the ability to have WiFi literally almost anywhere in town.

"We have built a WiFi system throughout our uptown area and along our main highway corridor. The college of course is totally wired for WiFi and if you go into public parks we're working on trying to get the connection ubiquitous throughout the community where you walk out of your house being connected to WiFi connection and then on a street your computer is connected wherever you go."

Okotoks has considered looking into their own network but there's hint of if or when it could come to town.
