A very dangerous drug has made its way to High River.

RCMP Corporal Blair Schneider says Fentanyl can kill because it can be very potent.

He says the people who make it do so in their basements and their garages.

"It's a very unsophisticated way, it's made with a pill press, it's made with Fentanyl and because it's not controlled in any laboratory, two milligrams in less than 50 per-cent of the population," Cpl. Schneider says. "So it's kind of like making chocolate chip cookies, they call it the chocolate chip effect, some chocolate chip cookies have seven chips, some have none, some have two, there's no really accurate way to measure how much of this Fentanyl is is going into these pills."

He says if you have a cold and go to the drug store and buy something off the shelf or are prescribed something it's gone through a rigorous testing process and prior approval whereas even the people making this drug don't know exactly what's in it.

"We know that it's here (High River), we haven't seen a lot of it but we definitely know it's here and likely coming from Calgary or Vancouver but as with any drug the people that want it, want to have access to it, they can get it," he says.

There have been over 200 deaths so far this year in Alberta from Fentanyl use.

Corporal Schneider says it can even be absorbed into the skin so if you find pills, and don't know what they are, you should call the RCMP.
