High River's Family and Community Support Services is bringing the safeTALK a suicide prevention workshop to the town this Friday.

Caitland Asmundson says it's open to pretty much anyone in the community over the age of 15 and if there are young people who want to take it she says it's a great tool to have..

"Basically what you're going to come away with is the ability to notice or recognize when someone might be  giving an invitation to talk about suicide and then also how to open that conversation and ask someone about suicide and connect them to community based resources," Asmundson says.

She says most people don't want to die, they just want to escape the pain they're feeling so when someone can support them and start a dialogue them they can shift to keeping them safe until those feelings pass.

The workshop goes from 8:30 a.m to noon at the Alliance Church, and it's free but pre-registration is requested by calling FCSS at 403-603-3447 or e-mailing Caitland Asmundson at casmundson@highriver.ca.f-c-s-s.
