Alberta is set to join the rest of the country by giving farm workers the same rights for a safe work place and compensation from injury the rest of us already enjoy.

Newly minted Agriculture Minister Oneil Carlier says they don't have to spend a lot of time writing up new laws, they just need to include farm workers in the ones we already have.

"It's more about removing the exemption farmworkers had in Alberta. it's not like a whole bunch of work has to be done writing new legislation. It just has to move forward to give those same rights that all workers in Alberta have to farm workers as well. So, I think it's a long time coming. And we're excited and looking forward to being able to make that progress."

Once the legislation is passed, farm workers will be covered by workers comp, occupational health and safety as well as other benefits offered to workers in other industries.

Not everyone is happy about it, particularly large grain growing associations, and large corporate farms who say giving workers safety protection will cut into their bottom line.

Carlier however says his department and the Labour Ministry will work with stakeholders to get their input on shaping any proposed legislation.

Alberta is the only Province who don't extend workplace protection to farmers or farm workers.
