Over 800 Foothills School Division employees spent Wednesday, August 30, at Oilfields High School in Black Diamond preparing themselves for the upcoming school year.

FSD Opening Day is similar to back to school, but for adults instead of students, with keynote speakers and professional development sessions for staff.

Foothills School Division Superintendent John Bailey says the goal of the day is to kick off the year on an optimistic note for employees.

"At the start of the year, we take the opportunity to get all of our staff together. Typically we have a guest speaker come in, and we'll talk about the year a little bit, we try to give a positive, upbeat message to the year around our work."

Bailey says he's happy the division continues to hold "Opening Day" for employees, as it brings in teachers, support staff, custodians, bus drivers, and other administration.

"A day like this is really important because it reminds all of us of the bigger picture, we're part of a large organization in the Foothills as we have just under 900 employees all together. I think it's really good to know that all those people are connected to every child in the classroom, our goal is making sure we can have the best learning possible, so everyone is important."

He says the main message he'd like staff to take away from the day is it's all about perspective.

"When we get in the middle of things, we're busy, we're tired and grouchy, it's important to back up and remember why we do what we do. We have to think about our core values; we're in this to help people grow, learn and we can make a difference, so much of it is about attitude and perspective every day."

Students and teachers begin classes in the Foothills School Division Tuesday, September 5.
