With the province of Alberta is in a state of economic uncertainty and the Notley government calling on for a $15 minimum wage by 2018 there's a few question marks surrounding the local economy in Okotoks.

The Okotoks Chamber of Commerce has been working closely with federal and provincial levels of the chamber trying to make sure Okotoks livelihood continues to strive.

Chamber CEO Cheryl Actimichuk says the big concern for local businesses is the eventual minimum wage hike.

"We sent out a survey to our members all across Alberta, took that information, gave it back to the president of the Alberta Chamber of Commerce and he's up in Edmonton representing us with the appropriate ministers letting them know that small businesses in Alberta the majority of them aren't in favour of it."

Actimichuk says the chamber is doing everything it can to help it's members get through these tough economic times.

"We want to make sure that if those businesses are struggling, that we can help support them in some way, if we can let them know in Edmonton that the people in Okotoks are struggling or need support. That's our avenue is through the Alberta Camber of Commerce."

Actimichuk adds that in times like these it's an opportunity for all businesses to re-evaluate to conduct business.

"I think it's an opportunity not just if you're a chamber member or not but for everybody to sort of become more aware of what's actually going on in our town and what we need to do," she says. "The importance of supporting our local businesses and the amount of money that injects into our local economy from us doing that."

The Chamber is currently working with the higher levels of chambers of commerce, going to seminars on improving economic states and some members of the Okotoks chamber will head to Ottawa later this year to discuss local economics with federal leaders.
