The province has an online tool to encourage more women to run for municipal office.

High River's only female Councillor, Cathy Couey says it's a good idea to have that type of information available.

"What I think is really great about this program is there's somewhere where women can go and become a little more educated before they take that step," she says. "I think, actually both male and female candidates it's a big step with a lot of considerations that go into it so I think it's great that there's that to go to."

Couey says a good, strong, diverse mix of people makes for strong councils.

She wouldn't want the number, or percentage, of women on council to be mandated.

"I'm going to say no. I think it needs to be a good, strong mix of individuals," Couey says. "I think you start setting those sorts of limits and you leave that open for maybe not the best candidates being elected."

She says most of what council deals with is community based and not gender specific, although there are areas where people might feel a male or female candidate might feel more inclined to have an interest.

Albertans will go to the polls October 16, 2017 to vote for municipal councils.
