An Edmonton NDP MLA has put forward a private members bill that would put an end to Daylight Saving Time in Alberta.

Thomas Dang says the idea came from the party's rural caucus which sent him off to do some research.

"When we started talking to our constituents and our agriculture partners it was really obvious that young families and our partners really don't like having to change their clocks twice a year and it can actually be quite detrimental for them," Dang says. "Quite often if the clock changes, your kids are going to wake up at the same time every day regardless of that clock changing so if your snack time is scheduled for 10 a.m. every morning, well, suddenly it's 9 a.m. and the kids crying because they don't have food yet."

He says they talked to a poultry and a dairy farmer and they said if they change the time for their animals they can actually see significant reduction in yields if they have to change the clock.

Dang says when they announced the idea in December they received over 400 e-mails in one day and 80 per cent were in favour of doing away with the time change. After the online survey there's been over a thousand responses with 90 per cent happy to see Daylight Saving Time end.
