High River's loss is Vancouver's gain.

The Town's Director of Disaster Management, Carly Benson is moving to Vancouver to take on the position of Manager of Emergency Management for the west coast city.

She says it may seem like a big leap but it really isn't.

"There's no greater challenge for someone who's in emergency management than helping a community recover from a disaster, especially or the magnitude of the flood, I think the Vancouver role will be different but I'm not expecting it to be any more stressful that the past four years here in High River," Benson says.

The Town organization nearly doubled after the 2013 flood to help the community recover but now it's getting back to more normal staffing levels. Benson says from an emergency management standpoint where the focus was on training staff what to do in an emergency it has been a bit of a challenge with the staffing changes.

But she says there is still an organization that's dedicated to training and that's helped immensely with all the support from council and senior leadership.

Benson says she's proud of what's been accomplished.

"I'm so impressed with how far this community has come and it's vision and hope for the future is so inspiring," she says.

She leaves the post at the end of September.

Council has also named three people to the position of Deputy Directors of Emergency Management; Trevor Allan, Lisa Reinders and Eugene Lund.
