After Woodside in Airdrie became the first dog-friendly golf course in Alberta, the Crystal Ridge Golf Club in Okotoks is wondering if they should be the second.

The club recently put a post on Facebook, simply asking followers for their opinion on whether it would be a good idea for the course.

Head Pro Greg Johnson says it's a unique idea that could attract more golfers to the course.

"We're looking for new ways to get people involved in the sport of golf," he says. "Or, get people that normally wouldn't have time because they have an animal at home, to possibly now come out and bring their dog out for a round of golf, and come out and enjoy the facility here."

Johnson says so far the responses have been polarizing, with many people raising concerns about the risks and repercussions of having dogs on a golf course.

He says if the club were to go ahead with the idea, there would obviously be a few rules.

Two of the nearly 50 comments in response to Crystal Ridge pondering the idea of allowing dogs on the golf course.

"Dogs would have to be on a leash, you'd have to be responsible for cleaning up after your dogs, and obviously your dog would need to be socialized, because it would be in a social environment," he says. "But, once again, it's an opportunity for you to get your pooch out for the evening, and instead of leaving it at home alone, you can bring it out to possibly enjoy a night on the golf course with you."

Johnson says should the course decide to allow dogs on the course, it would only be at a designated time.

"If we made the decision to go forward with it, it wouldn't be a regular daily thing," he says. "If we did do the pilot program, it'd be one evening a week, probably a Sunday evening, when we typically don't have a lot of users on the golf course as it is, but maybe that'd be the opportunity to try it out and see how things go with that."

Johnson says there's nothing set in stone at this point, and they'll take all comments into account before making a decision.
