A credit card monitoring agency says Canadians are carrying fewer credit cards but are racking up record levels of debt on the cards they have.

According to TransUnion Canadians charged $94.2-Billion dollars in the fourth quarter of 2016 in comparison to $91-billion in the fourth quarter of 2015.

The average Canadian now carries $4,094 of debt on their credit cards

Some are struggling to pay for their credit card bills.

TransUnion says credit card delinquency rates in Alberta have jumped 23 per cent from the fourth quarter last year to the same period in 2015 while they're up 22 per cent in Saskatchewan over the same period.

Consolidated Credit Counselling Services of Canada recommends the following:

 - Stop adding to your debt right away
 - Make a budget
 - Save your money
 - Put away your credit card

And declutter your life, maybe with a spring garage sale.
