Foothills residents have the opportunity to create Okotoks Kraft Hockeyville anthem.

A song contest has been created to help set Okotoks apart from other towns who've been nominated for the famous national contest.

The town recently received word that its nomination for Hockeyville had been accepted last week.

Deana Halifax, who's behind Okotoks nomination, says creating a song is a good way to get the community active with the nomination.

"We want people to get involved so we decided to create a contest for Okotoks Kraft Hockeyville theme song and we just want residents to get together with either their friends, family, school, or their hockey team to come up with a unique song."

Halifax says a song could maybe help Okotoks standout.

"I think it's something different, I'm not sure if every community out there nominated is actually doing a theme song but I thought it would get the community involved and inspire them and give us an edge if we come up with a really good song."

She adds there's no strict criteria involved but hopes to see Okotoks and hockey be the focus of the song along with a good beat.

If a writer doesn't feel comfortable with using their own voice for their piece, a local singer will be found to bring life to their work.

The contest is underway until 11:59 p.m. on Feb.12. Songs will be posted on the Okotoks Hockeyville 2016 Facebook page for residents to vote on Feb.13.
