Alberta has reached what Dr. Deena Hinshaw calls a "somber milestone".

Nine more deaths have been reported, including four in the last 24 hours, to bring the COVID-19 death toll over one hundred to 104.

There have been 70 new cases for a total of 5,836 while 2,942 people have recovered.

There are 936 cases at the Cargill plant north of High River with 810 people recovering.

Dr. Hinshaw says she's heard of certain people being stigmatized but says that works against stopping the spread of the virus.

"When people are stigmatized or targeted it blocks our collective ability to control the spread as people may fear getting tested or talking to public health," she says. "We should be supporting people who are in this situation, not stigmatizing them".

There are 469 cases at the JBS plant with 998 in the city of Brooks, which Dr. Hinshaw says shows this is not just something that happens at the plant but through contacts between people at the plant and others in the community.

She says there have been a couple of positive displays of what can happen when Alberta Health Services learns of a case of Corona virus right away, including the Mountainview Poultry plant in Okotoks where one person was infected.

Dr. Hinshaw says supports were put in place right away and there have only been five cases at the plant since the first was reported.
