High River town council is getting behind the efforts of the Foothills Community Immigration Society.

The group wrote to council asking it to consider a letter of support in its efforts for funding to continue.

Mayor Craig Snodgrass says the society really helped newcomers navigate the bureaucracy after the 2013 flood and continue to do so.

"People in High River need to understand that this isn't over yet, there's still people that have needs that are a result of the flood and we've got to make sure that we take care of these people properly and not abandon them and set them up for failure in the future, we've got to get them through this," he says.

Snodgrass says the Immigration Society is like the Hearts and Minds group and Family and Community Support Services in its efforts.

"The immigration services, people do the exact same thing," he says. "Myrna Scovoranski does a fantastic job for this town, so this is just a letter to the government to continue the financial support".

The society helps immigrants and those working as Temporary Foreign Workers.
