Grade 1 and 2 students art Longview School have a big event planned for Wednesday, May 25.

Their teacher, Emily Christensen says, while taking about the fires in Fort McMurray, the students decided they wanted to help the people who had lost so many of their belongings.

"We had started talking about the fires in Fort McMurray and the kids were really sad that some of the people wouldn't have houses anymore, so they started thinking about ways that they could up with money to help the people that were a victim of the fires," she says. "And they all thought of their own ways to come up with money, so mostly it was to have a garage sale or selling their stuffies or having a lemonade stand, so I brought it to my principal and we thought of having a garage sale, lemonade stand and hot dog lunch in support of Fort McMurray."

The students went around with a script they came up with and took it to every business in the community and every one stepped up to donate something for the garage sale while the Longview Hotel and one of the parent's businesses helped with the hot dogs.

Christensen says it's a high stakes event for one dad.

"One of the fathers decided that if we raised $500 he would shave his head and if we raised $1,500 he would shave his head and his goatee and if we raise $2,500 he would shave his head, his goatee and his eyebrows," Christensen says. "We have already about $400 raised because the kids have been starting for about a week so we're hoping to get up there."

The whole event goes Wednesday May 25, from noon to 2:50 p.m. at the school with proceeds going to the Salvation Army.
